9th Annual Family Camp

May 23-25, 2008

Since 2000, The YMCA Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Family Camp has been making a difference in the lives of children and families. Each year our camp is held over Memorial Day weekend at a YMCA facility in Julian.

At camp, parents have the unique opportunity to come together to discuss complex issues related to raising children with hearing loss. Parents attend workshops presented by a variety of professionals in the fields of education, assistive listening technology, child development and advocacy while children participate in their own age-appropriate activities.

Families of all communication methodologies attend, and although we are primarily an oral camp, we welcome families who use sign language as their primary mode of communication. We ask that families respect the communication choices of others and use our time together at camp to share information and learn from each others’ experiences.

This event has become an anchor for many families who have come to value the opportunity to renew and create lasting friendships. We hope that you will join us at camp this year!

$110 per adult and $100 per child, includes room and board (Friday night dinner through Sunday breakfast). Cabins are shared and families will bunk together. Children 1 and under are FREE.

We now offer a Saturday-only option for $45.00 per adult and $40 per child.

After May 9th there will be a cancellation fee of $20/person and late fees of $15/person for weekend registrations and $5/person for day-only.

While parents attend workshops, the children will participate in groups supervised by well-trained volunteers. Many of the counselors have a hearing loss and serve as terrific role models. The children will enjoy arts & crafts, hiking, sports, and games with other deaf, hearing and hard-of-hearing campers. Children 1 and under remain with their parents.

Family camp is held at Camp Marston, a 230 acre mountain retreat in the San Diego County mountains. New sleeping lodges offer comfortable, clean and modern facilities. The grass sports area provides a wonderful setting for our outdoor activities and nearby trails and forests invite families to enjoy the picturesque hills of Julian. Parent meetings are held in the Holmes Lodge, a spacious meeting room that can easily accommodate our growing group.
