10th Annual Family Camp

May 22-24, 2009

Since 2000, The YMCA Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Family Camp has been making a difference in the lives of children and families. Each year our camp is held over Memorial Day weekend at a YMCA facility in Julian.

At camp, parents have the unique opportunity to come together to discuss complex issues related to raising children with hearing loss. Parents attend workshops presented by a variety of professionals in the fields of education, assistive listening technology, child development and advocacy while children participate in their own age-appropriate activities.

Families of all communication methodologies attend, and although we are primarily an oral camp, we welcome families who use sign language as their primary mode of communication. We ask that families respect the communication choices of others and use our time together at camp to share information and learn from each others’ experiences.

This event has become an anchor for many families who have come to value the opportunity to renew and create lasting friendships. We hope that you will join us at camp this year!

scholarships

A limited number of partial scholarships are available to those in need.

The deadline for requesting a scholarship is April 15th.  To apply, complete the online application and check the "Yes, my family needs to be considered for a scholarship to be able to attend camp" box on the form.  Your credit card will not be billed until an agreed-upon rate has been established.

For more information contact Melanie Doyle at (858) 455-7571 or mdoyle3@san.rr.com.

While parents attend workshops, the children will participate in groups supervised by well-trained volunteers. Many of the counselors have a hearing loss and serve as terrific role models. The children will enjoy arts & crafts, hiking, sports, and games with other deaf, hearing and hard-of-hearing campers. Children 1 and under remain with their parents.

Family camp is held at Camp Marston, a 230 acre mountain retreat in the San Diego County mountains. Each of the lodges has four bedrooms which sleep up to six people each (in some cases two families will be housed in the same room).  There is a nice sized community room complete with couches, tables and a wood-stove.  Each lodge has a men's and women's bathroom & showers just down the hall, complete with all the modern conveniences.

The grass sports area provides a wonderful setting for our outdoor activities and nearby trails and forests invite families to enjoy the picturesque hills of Julian. Parent meetings are held in the Holmes Lodge, a spacious meeting room that can easily accommodate our growing group.
